'They Lied!' Kelly Clarkson Reveals She Never Received $1M Cash and Car Prize After Winning 'American Idol'
The singer and talk show host shares her shocking experience with 'American Idol' prizes.

Nearly 25 years ago, in 2002, a young singer from Texas stepped onto the stage of American Idol and changed television history. Kelly Clarkson's powerhouse vocals and relatable charm made her the first-ever champion of the reality singing competition, launching her into global stardom.
Now, Clarkson has revealed that she never received her $1 million (£750,000) cash and car prize that was promised by the show. Speaking candidly on her talk show, Clarkson said that the show 'lied,' sparking fresh conversation about transparency in reality TV competitions.
Clarkson Reveals She Never Received Her $1 Million Prize
During the 10 March episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, Clarkson was interviewing The Traitors season 4 winner Rob Rausch, who disclosed he has yet to receive his $220,800 (£165,200) prize. Clarkson responded by recalling her own experience.
'I relate to this so hard core because whenever I won, you probably weren't alive when I was on American Idol, but I literally was on the show, and they were like, "Oh you win a million dollars or whatever, da da da," No, you didn't. They lied,' Clarkson revealed.
She clarified that instead of cash, the prize was positioned 'like a million dollars' worth of investment in you.'
The Missing Car Prize
The Since U Been Gone singer also revealed that the show promised her a car. 'And then they said you get a car. And I needed it, 'cause my car is bashed in and I couldn't afford the deductible, and then no! I did not get a car!'
The Texas native then called out the show for giving the Season 2 runner-up, Clay Aiken, and his mother cars, 'I was like, what the (bleep)? I remember Clay telling me that the second season. He was like, "Yeah, they gave my mom one",' Clarkson said.
Clarkson ended her rant and playfully warned Rausch, 'That's why I'm saying you might not see it. You might now see it'.
'But you know what? Hope you got enough TV time. Look, I feel like, look, you are a really good actor,' she added.
Clarkson's 'American Idol' Journey
Despite the missing prizes, Clarkson's career has flourished. She joined the show in 2002 at just 20 years old. During her audition, the vocal powerhouse wowed judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson with standout renditions of Madonna's Express Yourself and Etta James' At Last.

Although the singer revealed she never received the promised $1 million (£750,000) cash prize or the car, her post-American Idol career has been nothing short of legendary. She has dominated the charts with multiple Billboard Hot 100 hits, including the No. 1 anthems Since U Been Gone and Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You).
Clarkson is also a three-time Grammy Award winner and has been honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Her television career has been equally impressive. She served as a coach on The Voice for ten seasons—securing four victories—and launched the Emmy-winning The Kelly Clarkson Show in 2019.
