Elon Musk Confesses He Feels Completely Empty Sleeping Alone Despite His Staggering Wealth
Tesla and SpaceX boss reveals that professional success cannot replace the need for romantic companionship, highlighting the emotional challenges faced by even the wealthiest individuals

Tesla and SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk has openly discussed the reality of his personal life, stating that leading major automotive and space ventures does not replace his need for companionship.
Despite his staggering wealth, Musk described romantic companionship as essential to his happiness, noting that he feels empty when sleeping alone.
The billionaire has a personal history that includes three marriages, including two to actress Talulah Riley. He married author Justine Wilson in 2000 and divorced her in 2008. He later married Riley in 2010, divorced her in 2012, remarried her in 2013 and divorced her again in 2016. He also had high-profile relationships with actress Amber Heard and musician Grimes.
Elon Musk Confesses He Feels Completely Empty
After his breakup with Heard, Musk discussed loneliness in a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone. He spoke plainly about what he wanted from a relationship. His comments suggest that professional achievement does not, in his view, replace having a long-term partner.
'If I'm not in love, if I'm not with a long-term companion, I cannot be happy,' Musk told Rolling Stone in 2017.
He was candid for a chief executive of his stature. The reality of his daily routine includes moments of quiet isolation.
It is wild to think about someone with such vast resources dealing with the same domestic complaints as anyone else. 'I will never be happy without having someone. Going to sleep alone kills me,' he said.
Elon Musk Describes the Reality of Loneliness
Musk described being alone in a large house, hearing footsteps echo through the hallway with nobody there and nobody on the pillow beside him. It was a grounded admission from a billionaire whose professional life revolves around some of the biggest projects on Earth.
Money can buy a lot of things. Apparently, it cannot buy someone to argue over the thermostat with. The image of the world's richest man sitting alone in an empty house is a stark contrast to his public persona as an intensely driven entrepreneur.
Professional Success Does Not Replace a Partner
Musk returned to the subject of loneliness in a 2022 conversation with Axel Springer chief executive Mathias Döpfner. When asked whether he felt lonely himself, he acknowledged that he sometimes feels lonely.
'I think most people are not happy being alone,' Musk said. He described staying alone in a small house in South Texas while working on the Starship rocket programme. He noted that the isolation felt particularly strong when his dog was not there.
For Musk, being surrounded by employees, engineers, investors and family is not necessarily the same as having a partner waiting at home.
How Wealth Does Not Guarantee Romantic Companionship
His housing history adds another interesting wrinkle to his statements on isolation. According to the supplied report, Musk once described a roughly $50,000 house near the Starbase facility in Texas as a rental from SpaceX. It is a bit mad to imagine a billionaire living in a modest rental property while building spaceships.
The report noted that he later purchased a larger Austin-area property, so the small rental should not be presented as his only residence or current full-time home.
His personal life continues to attract attention partly because it sits in sharp contrast with his public image. Whether in a large Austin home or a modest Texas rental, Musk maintains that professional achievement does not replace romantic companionship for him.
