Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at the age of 54. According to a statement released by his family, the actor passed away peacefully in his sleep from natural causes. They described him as a passionate and creative individual who, in recent years, had devoted himself to painting and visual art. While acknowledging that he had faced personal struggles in the past, his family said he had been receiving treatment and remained optimistic about the future. They asked for privacy as they mourn his loss and celebrate his life.

Brendon rose to prominence in the late 1990s as Xander, one of Buffy Summers' closest friends and a core member of the show's "Scooby Gang". His character became a fan favourite thanks to his humour, loyalty and emotional depth, offering a grounded counterpoint to the supernatural drama. During and after his time on the series, which ran from 1997 to 2003, Brendon also appeared in films such as Psycho Beach Party alongside Amy Adams and Lauren Ambrose, as well as Demon Island and Unholy. Later, he had a recurring role on Criminal Minds as Kevin Lynch, appearing in over 20 episodes.

Despite his professional success, Brendon's life was marked by ongoing struggles with addiction and mental health. He first entered rehabilitation in 2004 for alcoholism and would return to treatment multiple times over the years. Beginning in 2010, he faced a series of legal issues, including arrests related to substance use, property damage and domestic violence. In several instances, he pleaded guilty to charges and agreed to further rehabilitation. He also spoke publicly about his mental health challenges, including depression and past trauma, and made attempts to seek long-term recovery.

In later years, Brendon remained in contact with fans through social media, where he shared updates about his health and his artwork. In 2023, he revealed that he had undergone two spinal surgeries and suffered a heart attack the previous year, describing the emotional and financial strain of medical treatment. Born in Los Angeles, he had an identical twin brother, Kelly Donovan, and initially pursued acting to help overcome a stutter. Though his life was often turbulent, Brendon left a lasting impression through his performances and the connection he maintained with his audience.
