MrBeast to Host Oscars 2027? Fans in Total Meltdown: 'I Ain't Watching the Academy Awards!'
The Academy has confirmed that the Oscars will move to YouTube globally starting in 2029.

A single joke at the 2026 Oscars has snowballed into a full-blown internet backlash. When Conan O'Brien wrapped the ceremony with a surprise sketch that appeared to hand the future of the Academy Awards to YouTube superstar MrBeast, fan reaction spiralled.
Within minutes, social media lit up with dramatic reactions questioning whether Hollywood's biggest night would now actually be hosted by a YouTuber. Whether satire or signal, the moment hit a nerve and sparked a fresh debate about what the Oscars could look like next.
The Post-Ceremony Joke That Didn't Land Well
The moment came during a pre-recorded bit inspired by Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another. In the sketch, Conan O'Brien's character is crowned 'host for life' only for the scene to take an absurd turn.

The sketch features Jim Downey showing O'Brien his new office. It is implied that O'Brien is poisoned and his body removed. A close-up of the office door then reveals his nameplate being replaced with one bearing MrBeast's name.
According to reports, the bit was intended as satire. Online, however, not everyone took it that way.
Why MrBeast Was Even Part of the Bit
The joke was not random. It tapped into a real shift already underway.
The Academy has confirmed that the Oscars will move to YouTube globally starting in 2029 which is a massive change for a ceremony that has lived on traditional television for decades.
Now, enter MrBeast, the king of YouTube and arguably the most recognisable creator on the platform. The implication was clear: if the Oscars are heading to YouTube, could someone like him represent its future?
'I Ain't Watching!' — The Internet Reacts
Within minutes of the sketch airing, reactions started pouring in.
Some viewers flat-out rejected the idea. 'I ain't watching the Oscars if MrBeast is hosting,' one user said, while another added, 'Not watching anything hosted by him.'

Others mocked the possibility, joking that the ceremony could turn into a giveaway video or viral stunt. Moreover, the divide was instant and the verdict was clear – cinephiles do not want their 'superbowl' to be hosted by a YouTuber.
The Bigger Fear: What Happens to the Oscars Next?
At the centre of the reaction is a deeper concern.
For decades, the Oscars have leaned on legacy hosts like Steve Martin or Billy Crystal, figures tied closely to Hollywood tradition. Later, the stage shifted to talk show personalities like Ellen DeGeneres, Jimmy Kimmel and most recently Conan O'Brien.
The prospect of a digital creator stepping into that role signals something bigger than just a hosting change. It suggests a shift in audience, tone, and even what the Oscars represent.
MrBeast Responds And Keeps the Joke Going
Not long after the ceremony, MrBeast joined in.
He shared a screenshot from the sketch on social media, leaning into the moment rather than shutting it down. The response only added fuel to the conversation, blurring the line between joke and possibility.
However, there has been no official announcement about future hosts.
O'Brien could return, potentially joining the ranks of repeat hosts like Martin. But the sketch made one thing clear: the Academy is aware of how much the landscape is changing. With YouTube now in the mix, the idea of a creator-led Oscars does not feel as far-fetched as it once did.
