The Calder area of Edinburgh went through tense moments on Monday, 2 March, after a man wielding two knives roamed around, resulting in two people getting injured. Alarming as it may have been, Police Scotland assured everyone that it was an isolated incident and not terror-related.

Police were called to the scene at around 8:25 in the morning after receiving reports of the knife-wielding man causing a disturbance. The two casualties from the incident suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the BBC reported. They were brought to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for medical attention.

The victims included a man who was reportedly a concierge in the neighbouring flats. He was treated for injuries that were consistent with being stabbed.

The other was a woman who had a cut on her forehead. However, police claim that the woman's injury was not caused by a bladed weapon, BBC News reported.

'I understand what happened was alarming for the local community and I want to reassure the public that there is no ongoing wider risk,' Ch Insp Scott Kennedy assured.

The trail of chaos came to an end after the male suspect was cornered at a block of flats. Ending up at Cobbinshaw House, photos show how the man appeared from an 11th-floor window, sporting a sinister grin and looking down at the crowd who were shouting at him. The photo was shot by a local photographer named Alan Simpson, according to a report by CBS News.

Shop Owner Shares Harrowing Ordeal

Based on initial reports, the suspect was prowling the area with two knives and was undoubtedly up to something bad. According to one witness, Asif Hussain, the assailant initially caused a panic when he entered his convenience store.

Hussain detailed how people who were at the store were sent into a panic when the armed man entered. He had the presence of mind to warn everyone and instruct them to head to the back of the shop for their safety.

'Our procedure is that if there's anything like that happening, get to the back of the shop and barricade yourself in the office. You know you can't defend yourself if the person's got two knives, there's nothing much you can do,' Hussain explained.

Unfortunately, one woman was unable to make it to the room in time. She ended up getting injured but was eventually able to run out of the shop screaming for help.

As of this writing, the identity of the man who caused chaos in the Calder area remains unknown. Also yet to be revealed is if the man had some kind of mental illness after appearing undeterred by the injuries he inflicted on two innocent people.

Despite the incident, Edinburgh remains one of the safest places compared to other UK towns and cities. The chances of people becoming victims of knife attacks are low, although cases related to it are growing.

According to the latest annual crime statistics, offences in public places involving a knife have risen by 29% this year. This is roughly more than a quarter compared to previous years, according to data gathered by the Edinburgh Inquirer.

There were 250 incidents in 2024–25 and 178 in 2022–23. It is also worth to note that knife-carrying was found to be more common among younger men.
