George R.R. Martin on 'House of the Dragon': 'Not My Story Anymore' After Ryan Condal Clash
The real battle behind 'House of the Dragon' as Martin says his feedback slowly stopped influencing the final scripts during development of Season 2

For years, fans believed the biggest battle in House of the Dragon was between Team Black and Team Green. But according to author George R. R. Martin, the real conflict happened behind the scenes. The creator of A Song of Ice and Fire stunned fans after revealing that his relationship with showrunner Ryan Condal had deteriorated so badly that he eventually declared, 'This is not my story any longer.'
The confession came during a revealing interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where Martin described their partnership as 'worse than rocky. It is abysmal.' His words immediately sparked debate among fans of the HBO prequel House of the Dragon, which is based on his book Fire & Blood.
Martin explained that the collaboration had once worked well. In the early stages of the show, he was closely involved in shaping the scripts and offering feedback on story changes. However, the relationship gradually unravelled as the production moved deeper into its later seasons.
How Their Creative Partnership Fell Apart
According to Martin, the partnership between himself and Condal functioned smoothly during the first season of House of the Dragon. The author said he would read early script drafts and send notes to the production team.
'I thought Ryan and I were partners,' Martin recalled. 'I would read early drafts of the scripts. I would give notes. He would change some things. It was working really well, I thought.'
But everything changed during the development of Season 2. Martin claimed his feedback slowly stopped influencing the final scripts.
'He basically stopped listening to me,' Martin said. 'I would give notes and nothing would happen. Sometimes he would explain why he was not doing it. Other times he would say, "I will think about that."'
The growing frustration eventually reached a point where HBO executives stepped in to manage communication between the two creators. Instead of speaking directly with Condal about changes, Martin said he was instructed to send his notes to the network first.
That shift marked a turning point in the creative relationship.
The Blog Post and Story Changes
The tension became public in September 2024 when Martin published a blog post on his website criticising a major change in the show's storyline. The post, titled 'Beware the Butterflies,' focused on the decision to remove the character Maelor from the controversial Blood and Cheese storyline.
Martin argued that the change would create a ripple effect that could damage future storylines adapted from his book Fire & Blood. The author warned that altering key events could weaken the long term narrative of the Targaryen civil war.
The post quickly drew widespread attention among fans and media outlets. However, it was later deleted from Martin's blog after HBO contacted his management team.
Reflecting on the incident later, Martin said the post had included both praise and criticism for the show. But he admitted the negative points were what captured the most attention.
'I would have put it back up,' he said. 'But then I would have looked like an idiot. And most of the post was praise, but that is not what people focused on.'
Zoom Meeting That Led to Martin's Dramatic Statement
The breaking point reportedly came during a tense Zoom meeting involving producers and HBO executives. During the call, Condal presented his creative plans for future seasons of House of the Dragon.
Sources say Martin strongly disagreed with several elements of the plan. The disagreement escalated as the two creators debated how the story should continue.
It was during that meeting that Martin delivered the line that shocked fans.
'This is not my story any longer,' he reportedly told Condal.
Following the clash, Martin stepped back from the production for a period at HBO's request. He later returned to the show months afterwards, although he has not publicly explained the reasons for his comeback.
Balancing the Creative and Practical Side
Condal later responded to Martin's criticisms in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He said he had made every effort to include Martin in the adaptation process but insisted that practical challenges sometimes required creative changes.
'I have to keep the writing process moving forward and also manage the practical side of production,' Condal said. 'My responsibility is to the crew, the cast and HBO.'
For fans of the Game of Thrones universe, the revelation has added a dramatic new layer to the saga behind the scenes. While dragons and rival houses dominate the screen, the biggest clash in the world of Westeros may have been happening in the writers' room all along.
