HBO's Harry Potter reboot has already confirmed its young trio and several major adult roles, yet one question continues to dominate fan discussion: who will play Voldemort?

The answer, for now, appears to be more complicated than a simple casting announcement.

Season 1 May Only Feature Voldemort's Voice

The first season will adapt 'The Philosopher's Stone', which means the Dark Lord is unlikely to appear in full physical form. In the original story, Voldemort is revealed only during Harry's confrontation with Professor Quirrell, when his face appears on the back of Quirrell's head.

According to reporting from EpicStream's coverage of Voldemort's Season 1 role, there has been no official announcement of a full casting for the character. However, insider Daniel Richtman has claimed that the production has already cast a voice actor for Voldemort.

That approach would align closely with the source material. Rather than introducing a fully formed Dark Lord from the outset, the series could gradually build his presence through voice and fragmented appearances before his physical return in later seasons.

As HBO plans to adapt one novel per season, Voldemort's complete on-screen return would not occur until 'The Goblet of Fire'. That timeline suggests viewers may not see a fully embodied Dark Lord for several years.

Ralph Fiennes' Comments Spark Cillian Murphy Speculation

Even so, speculation around the role has intensified following comments made by Ralph Fiennes, who portrayed Voldemort in the original film series.

During a red carpet appearance, Fiennes appeared to suggest that the role may have already been cast. He then named Cillian Murphy as a 'very good choice' before expressing visible uncertainty about whether any official confirmation had been made.

As reported by ShortList's report on the Cillian Murphy rumours, the comment quickly circulated online. Murphy has long been a popular fan choice for Voldemort, largely due to his intense screen presence in projects such as 'Peaky Blinders' and his Oscar-winning role in 'Oppenheimer'.

However, there is no confirmation from HBO that Murphy has joined the cast. In fact, Murphy previously stated on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast that he knew nothing about the role. He described Fiennes as 'an acting legend' and wished luck to whoever ultimately takes on the character.

So Who Will Play Voldemort?

At present, there is no confirmed actor attached to the physical role of Voldemort in HBO's Harry Potter reboot.

The most credible information suggests that Season 1 may rely solely on a voice performance, or rely on artificial intelligence such as Respeecher's AI voice generator, but still staying faithful to the first novel's structure. As a result, a full casting announcement may be deliberately delayed.

Meanwhile, the broader cast continues to take shape. Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout have been announced as Harry, Hermione and Ron. John Lithgow is set to play Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu will portray Snape, Janet McTeer takes on McGonagall and Nick Frost steps in as Hagrid. Composer Hans Zimmer has also been confirmed to write an original score.

With the reboot expected to premiere in early 2027 and span a decade, HBO appears to be pacing its major reveals carefully.

For now, the answer remains clear. Voldemort's full casting has not been officially confirmed. Cillian Murphy's name continues to circulate, fuelled by Ralph Fiennes' comments, yet no formal announcement has been made.

Until HBO speaks publicly, the identity of the next Dark Lord remains one of the reboot's biggest mysteries.
