Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift Feud Rumours Explained: ‘No Shade’ Remark Over Early Career Sparks Viral Debate Screenshot/X

Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift are back at the centre of online feud rumours after Cyrus, speaking in Los Angeles on Monday at the launch of her Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special, said there was 'no shade' in a remark about Swift being chosen early in her career for music that would fit someone 'performing in a barn.'

The latest row did not emerge from any confirmed falling-out between the two singers. It grew out of Cyrus's retelling of how Swift became involved with Hannah Montana The Movie, when she said Swift was brought in at 'the very beginning of her career' and was a fit for the sort of music the production wanted.

That was enough to send social media off in the usual direction, with fans arguing over whether the line was simply practical casting logic or a sly dig dressed up as a disclaimer.

Why Miley Cyrus And Taylor Swift Are Being Debated Again

Cyrus has been promoting the Disney+ anniversary special, which debuted on Tuesday, 24 March, and the Hannah Montana nostalgia machine is plainly working.

At the premiere at the El Capitan Theatre, she leaned hard into the memory of the character, arriving in a silver Rabanne chainmail gown layered over a white Hannah Montana T-shirt and wearing her hair with the familiar fringe that made the look instantly recognisable.

It was during those recollections of the Disney years that Swift's name resurfaced. Cyrus said Swift had been recruited to contribute music to Hannah Montana The Movie, adding that the filmmakers were looking for someone who could, 'Authentically, no shade ... be performing in a barn.'

Swift wrote 'You'll Always Find Your Way Back Home' for the closing of the film and also contributed another track that was not used. That line is the entire engine of the current rumour cycle.

Cyrus herself appeared aware that the wording might land awkwardly, which is likely why she inserted 'no shade' in the first place. Ironically, that may have made the moment more combustible, not less. People tend to hear a disclaimer like that and assume a sting is coming anyway.

The Miley Cyrus And Taylor Swift History Fans Keep Pulling Back Up

The reason the latest clip has travelled so quickly is that it has plugged into a much older archive of Cyrus comments about Swift. In a past interview with The New York Times, Cyrus said she was not trying to be in Swift's 'squad' and added that none of her friends were famous because she liked 'real people who are living real lives.' It was a blunt line then and it still reads that way now.

She was even sharper when discussing Swift's Bad Blood video in an interview with Marie Claire. 'I don't get the violence revenge thing,' Cyrus said. 'That's supposed to be a good example? And I'm a bad role model because I'm running around with my t**ies out? I'm not sure how t**ies are worse than guns.'

That history does not prove there is a feud now, but it does explain why fans are so quick to believe one exists. Cyrus has, at points, been openly dismissive of the brand of glossy celebrity sisterhood that came to define Swift's public image in the mid-2010s.

Even so, the pair have remained friends over the years, which leaves the current rumour looking less like a fresh rupture and more like the internet reanimating old tension whenever one line sounds a bit too pointed.

There was plenty else happening at the Los Angeles event that had nothing to do with Swift. Cyrus thanked Alex Cooper, who hosted and produced the anniversary special, and joked that she was 'creepy' for becoming her neighbour after previously interviewing her at home.

JoJo Siwa and Willow Smith were among the guests as Cyrus leaned into the character revival that made her famous from 2006 to 2011.

Still, it is Swift's cameo in the Hannah Montana story that has cut through. That says as much about fan culture as it does about either woman.

Swift has not commented on the latest debate, and nothing here confirms an active feud beyond the noise built around Cyrus's choice of words.
