The son of Hollywood icons Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal has returned to court as long-running criminal proceedings tied to a violent incident continue to move through the legal system. The case involving their son, Redmond O'Neal, has drawn renewed attention in recent weeks as legal developments signal that the case may finally be heading to trial.

Redmond James O'Neal appeared in court in Los Angeles on 10 March in connection with charges stemming from a series of alleged attacks in Los Angeles in 2018. During the appearance, observers noted new tattoos on his forehead resembling devil horns. The new tattoo quickly drew attention as images started circulating online, per People.

The court appearance followed a determination that O'Neal is mentally competent to stand trial. His attorney entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf.

Charges Linked to 2018 Alleged Crime Spree

Prosecutors allege that O'Neal carried out multiple violent incidents across the Los Angeles area in May 2018. Authorities say the case involves charges including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and robbery.

Investigators previously connected O'Neal to several attacks on strangers for multiple days during his spree. In one case, a man was allegedly stabbed after an encounter near Venice Beach, Los Angeles. Another incident was noted wherein police say a victim first believed he had only been punched before paramedics discovered a serious stab wound.

Authorities said, 'Initially, the victim thought that the suspect had merely 'punched' him in the back. However, once paramedics arrived, the paramedics discovered that the victim had sustained a serious stab wound to the left side of his body.'

Police also accused O'Neal of robbing a 7-11 in Santa Monica on 8 May, per The Independent. The alleged robbery ultimately led to his arrest and helped investigators connect him to the earlier string of violent attacks across Los Angeles.

According to the police, O'Neal allegedly threatened the clerk of the convenience store with a knife while demanding money. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said responding officers later discovered drugs and drug paraphernalia in his possession. He was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and possession of drug paraphernalia and a controlled substance.

Once in custody, authorities began comparing details from the robbery with evidence gathered from the earlier violent incidents. Surveillance footage, witness descriptions, and other investigative leads reportedly helped detectives link O'Neal to multiple assaults that had taken place in the days before the robbery.

A Long-Running Legal and Personal Struggle

The case has drawn attention partly because of O'Neal's family background. He is the only child of Farrah Fawcett, the Charlie's Angel star who died in 2009, and actor Ryan O'Neal, who died in 2003. O'Neal has faced years of legal problems and struggles with addiction.

Redmond James O'Neal has had prior run-ins with the law, including arrests linked to drug possession and repeated struggles with rehabilitation programmes. He was arrested for heroin possession in 2008, and in 2011, his probation was voided after he acknowledged in court that he had continued using drugs while enrolled in a court-mandated rehab programme.

In 2015, O'Neal was sentenced to three years in jail for violations tied to his recovery programme, per Enstarz.

O'Neal's conservator, Mela Murphy, has said he has made significant progress while receiving treatment. According to her statement, he has spent several years at Patton State Hospital and has been sober during that time. The legal case is expected to proceed in the coming months.
