Savannah Guthrie Reveals Chilling 'Blood On Doorstep' Clue In Nancy's Kidnapping
A daughter who makes a living telling other people's stories is now trapped inside the most frightening story of her own.

Savannah Guthrie has revealed harrowing new details about the disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie, describing how she and her siblings arrived at the 84‑year‑old's Arizona home earlier this year to find doors propped open, blood on the front doorstep, and the family's Ring camera ripped from the wall.
For starters, Nancy Guthrie has been missing since 31 January, when she was taken from her house in the middle of the night. Her abduction triggered a major search led by the Pima County Sheriff's Department and the FBI, and a $1 million family reward for information. Until now, much of what happened inside and just outside that quiet home in the desert had been kept from public view.
'Blood On The Front Doorstep': Inside The Night Nancy Guthrie Vanished
Speaking on NBC's Today show in a segment titled 'Savannah Speaks Out,' the broadcaster set aside her usual role as anchor and became, instead, the daughter of a missing woman trying to piece together a crime.
'The doors were propped open, there was blood on the front doorstep and the Ring camera had been yanked off,' she told co‑host Hoda Kotb. 'So we were saying, 'This is not OK.''
At first, Savannah Guthrie said, the family tried to come up with any explanation but the most frightening one. They wondered if Nancy Guthrie had suffered 'some kind of medical episode' in the night, perhaps serious enough that paramedics had arrived and taken her away through the back of the house, hence the open doors.
'We thought maybe they came and there was a stretcher and they took her out the back,' she recalled. 'But her phone was there, her purse was there, and all her things.'
Nothing about the scene made medical sense. There was no sign Nancy had left voluntarily. According to Guthrie, her mother's shoes were still in the house. Her medication was untouched. Yet traces of blood marked the terracotta tiles outside the front door, an image that has since circulated widely in US media.
The journalist struggled to reconcile those facts with the picture she carries of her mother, whom she described as 'a little person' taken in her pyjamas, barefoot and without her medicine.
She told viewers she could not fathom how anyone could 'live with themselves' after stealing someone so physically slight, and so vulnerable, from her bed.
New Clues And Lingering Questions In The Nancy Guthrie Case
In case you missed it, investigators last month released surveillance footage of a suspect they believe is linked to the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie. The figure is seen wearing a dark jacket and trousers, a ski mask or balaclava and carrying what appears to be a bunch of white flowers. In another still image, the person holds a backpack and what authorities have described as a weapon.
Savannah Guthrie has watched that footage like any crime reporter would, but this time with the knowledge that the person on the screen may be the one who stood over her mother's bed.
'It's just absolutely terrifying,' she told Kotb, her voice catching. 'It's just totally terrifying, and I can't imagine that that is who she saw standing over her bed.'
She could not finish the thought. 'I can't. It's too much,' she said, breaking down.
The family has also been dealing with a torrent of supposed ransom notes and messages sent to investigators. Guthrie said 'a slew' of such notes had been received, but she believes only two might be genuine. She did not elaborate on what distinguished those two from the rest, and neither the FBI nor the Pima County Sheriff's Department has publicly confirmed which, if any, are credible. Nothing is confirmed yet, so all of these alleged ransom communications should be taken with a grain of salt.
What is clear is that the official investigation remains active. 'It's still going,' Guthrie emphasised, pushing back at any suggestion the case had cooled. As a former attorney, she chose her words carefully.
'People have worked tirelessly, tirelessly, and we see that,' she said of the sheriff's office and the FBI. 'But we need answers. We cannot be at peace without knowing and someone can do the right thing. Our hearts are focused on that.'
The tension in her comments is obvious. On one hand, there is gratitude for detectives and forensic specialists combing through every lead. On the other hand, there is impatience with the fact that, nearly two months on, no one has been charged and Nancy Guthrie has not been found.
Savannah Guthrie also allowed a glimpse into how she is holding herself together as both a television figure and a daughter. She described herself as having a 'strong and resolute faith' and said she believes she has received a message from God about her mother's fate.
According to Guthrie, she 'heard a voice' telling her: 'You do know where she is. She's with me.' The Daytime Emmy winner added: 'So whether she's on this Earth still or whether she's in Heaven, I know where she is. I know who she's with.'
It is a startlingly intimate confession from a presenter more used to extracting stories from others. In her telling, faith fills the gaps that the investigation, for now, cannot.
Nancy Guthrie's whereabouts remain unknown. The family's $1 million reward for information leading to her return or to the arrest and conviction of those responsible still stands, and detectives say the joint investigation with federal agents continues in Arizona and beyond.
