Who Is Reed Blankenship? From Undrafted Free Agent to Super Bowl Champion, Now Joining Texans on $24.75M Deal
Four Eagles starters, including Blankenship, left on Day 1 of free agency, with key players securing over $116 million in guarantees elsewhere

They couldn't keep them all. Reed Blankenship knew it. He said so himself back in January.
The 27-year-old safety signed a three-year, $24.75 million (£18.4 million) contract with the Houston Texans on Monday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The deal includes $16.5 million (£12.3 million) in guaranteed money.
Four years ago, he got a $5,000 (£3,725) signing bonus as an undrafted free agent out of Middle Tennessee State. Now he's a Super Bowl champion walking into his prime with generational wealth.
But this isn't just a feel-good story about an underdog who made it. It's also about what he's leaving behind.
The Bromance That Defined Philadelphia's Secondary
Blankenship and cornerback Cooper DeJean weren't just teammates. They co-host the Exciting Mics podcast together. They wore matching Exciting Whites T-shirts on national television. On HBO's Hard Knocks, Blankenship joked that they were 'a married couple'.

So when the news broke Monday night, DeJean's reaction was immediate.
'Damn, gonna miss my dawg,' he wrote on X, adding a red heart emoji. 'Go be great brotha.'

He'd seen it coming. Earlier this offseason, DeJean was asked about the possibility of Blankenship leaving.
'It's going to be a little different if he's not back,' DeJean said. 'Obviously, just a guy I've spent a lot of time with. We've got a great connection on and off the field. But he's gotta do what's best for him and his family.'
That connection is now split between Philadelphia and Houston.
A Nobody Who Became Somebody
Blankenship's story still sounds made up. Undrafted. A $55,000 (£40,980) guarantee. Four years later, he's played 56 games with 50 starts. He's recorded 308 tackles, nine interceptions, and 23 pass breakups. He became the Eagles' defensive signal-caller, the guy teammates trusted to keep everyone aligned.
Head coach Nick Sirianni praised his leadership repeatedly during the 2025 season.
'Reed, obviously, is our quarterback back there helping everybody get lined up and being on the same page,' Sirianni said. 'Guys trust him to help communicate that. Our coaches trust him, I trust him.'
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio called him a 'stabilising player in our defence' after a season filled with injuries and rotating personnel.
That stability is now Houston's.
Four Starters Gone in One Afternoon
Blankenship's departure made him the fourth Eagles defensive starter to leave on Day 1 of free agency. The exodus is staggering.
- Edge rusher Jaelan Phillips agreed to a four-year, $120 million (£89 million) contract with the Carolina Panthers, with $80 million (£60 million) guaranteed.
- Linebacker Nakobe Dean, a key piece of the championship run, joined the Las Vegas Raiders on a three-year, $36 million (£27 million) deal, with $20 million (£15 million) guaranteed.
- Wide receiver Jahan Dotson left for Atlanta on a two-year, $15 million (£11 million) contract.
Combined guaranteed money for Phillips, Dean, and Blankenship alone exceeds $116 million (£86 million). Philadelphia either couldn't or wouldn't match those numbers.
'Who knows where we all end up?' Blankenship said after the Eagles' playoff loss in January. 'That's just part of the business side of it. They can't keep us all. I wish they could.'
What Houston Gets, What Philly Loses
For the Texans, this is a bargain. Blankenship joins a defence that finished 2025 ranked first in the NFL. He's 27, entering his prime, and brings championship experience.
For Philadelphia, general manager Howie Roseman now faces a rebuild in the secondary. Second-year safety Andrew Mukuba will step into a bigger role. The team could pursue veteran Marcus Epps as a stopgap. Compensatory picks will soften the financial blow.
But no draft pick replaces chemistry. No trade fills the void of a podcast partner, a locker room leader, a guy who went from nobody to somebody.
They couldn't keep them all. Blankenship knew it.
