Woman Accused of Killing 8-Year-Old Laughs in Court — Video Sparks Outrage
Victoria Johnson faces multiple charges after a tragic hit-and-run incident in Polk County

A shocking court appearance in Polk County, Florida, has drawn widespread attention after a woman accused in a hit-and-run that claimed the life of an 8-year-old boy and left a 10-year-old severely injured was seen laughing as formal charges were read.
On her first court appearance Friday held via a video conference, Victoria Johnson could be seen laughing and shaking her head in disbelief as the charges were read by the presiding judge. The 30-year-old woman from Florida is facing five charges in connection to a hit-and-run involving two children on Wednesday night.
The Crash and the Charges
On Wednesday, 11 March 2026, deputies responded to 911 calls from Faith Baptist Church in Winter Haven, where two young boys were struck by a vehicle while crossing Crystal Beach Road to get cupcakes following a church event.
The crash proved fatal for one of the victims, 8, who died from his injuries. A 10-year-old boy barely survived, as he suffered severe trauma, including a compound skull fracture, a broken arm, and a broken femur, and was hospitalised in critical condition.
Victoria Ashton Johnson of Winter Haven was arrested in the days that followed, facing multiple serious charges including leaving the scene of a crash involving death, leaving the scene with serious bodily injury, tampering with evidence, driving without a licence causing death, and giving false information to law enforcement officials, per Fox News.
KFOX reported that according to law enforcement, the suspect initially attempted to report her vehicle stolen and provided shifting accounts of the incident before admitting she was driving the SUV on the night of the crash. Johnson reported her 2009 blue Hyundai Santa Fe stolen to the Sheriff's Office.
Authorities identified the dark SUV after reviewing surveillance footage and analysing the debris from the crash site.
Court Appearance Draws Shock
During her first court appearance, as the presiding judge started reading the charges against her, Johnson was seen laughing and shaking her head on camera. At one point, she even told someone, 'I wasn't even in the car.'
The judge cautioned her not to discuss case details and offered to appoint a public defender, to which she answered, 'I don't know which one is better.' The judge responded, 'I can't give you any advice, ma'am. I'll appoint the public defender today if you want me to.' Johnson agreed.
Johnson admitted to deputies that she was a regular user of methamphetamine, saying that she had even taken it before driving her vehicle. Prosecutors say she later met with an acquaintance, Charles Cory Stewart, following the crash, used meth again, and attempted to dispose of the vehicle.
Stewart was later spotted driving the vehicle, and while deputies trailed and located him and his passenger, Mya Bass, to a Lake Wales home, the two hid in the home refusing to step outside. Both Stewart and Bass were later arrested and charged with resisting arrest, according to a report by The New York Times.
The Crash Claimed the Life of a Little Boy
The 8-year-old victim, a confirmed student at Boswell Elementary, 'had many close friends at school and was well-liked by all of the teachers and staff. He was known for his incredible spirit and smile, as well as his willingness to help others,' according to a spokesperson for Polk County schools.
'We are heartbroken by this loss, and praying for all who knew and loved this little boy,' the spokesperson continued.
