Surfing Legend Kurt Van Dyke Killed in Brutal Costa Rica Raid as Partner Survives Nightmare
A violent home invasion in Costa Rica claims the life of surfing icon Kurt Van Dyke, leaving the community in shock.

A quiet coastal escape turned into a nightmare when a violent home invasion claimed the life of Kurt Van Dyke, a beloved surfing figure. While his partner narrowly escaped the terrifying ordeal, the community remains in shock over the senseless loss of such a vibrant soul. This tragic event has left a void in the surfing world as authorities piece together the details of the fatal encounter.
The 31-year-old partner of surfing icon Kurt Van Dyke, known as Arroyo, escaped a brutal break-in at the couple's flat in Costa Rica. Arroyo recounted to local authorities how two gunmen restrained and struck her before they murdered Van Dyke. After the fatal struggle, the attackers made their escape, carrying off various high-value items from the property.
Reports identify Arroyo as the partner of Kurt Van Dyke, the celebrated California surfer and hotelier who was tragically killed during a suspected raid on their home. A native of Santa Cruz, the 66-year-old had made Costa Rica his base for many years, where he operated the Hotel Puerto Viejo in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca.
A Grisly Discovery
His body was discovered on Saturday at his residence in Hone Creek, Cahuita—a coastal spot on the Caribbean side near the Panama border, situated about 10 miles from his place of business.

At roughly 10:50 a.m. local time, officials responded to the residence after receiving a call about an ongoing assault. Evidence from the scene suggests a brutal encounter, as Van Dyke sustained several knife wounds and appeared to have been suffocated. Investigators located his body with a sheet pulled over his head and a blade lying nearby.
A Partner's Harrowing Survival
According to her account to officials, Arroyo was in the shower when the two armed suspects broke inside. After cornering the pair in one of the rooms, the men allegedly used zip ties to pin her down before carrying out an assault. When help arrived, she was found tied up but had not sustained any life-threatening injuries.
The attackers tore through the flat and seized several possessions, including a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. According to reports, CCTV footage captured the pair driving away from the scene in the stolen Elantra, along with another car. As of now, police have not taken anyone into custody or confirmed a reason for the targeting.
Crime Scene Details and Local Impact
Police arrived at a shocking sight, discovering Kurt Van Dyke beneath a bed with a sheet draped over his head. Early forensic checks indicated he had been stabbed several times and appeared to have been strangled. According to reports from The Latin Times, a blade was also recovered from the immediate area.
The killing has stunned the tight-knit community of Puerto Viejo and the international surfing scene. Roger Sams, who leads the Southern Caribbean Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, spoke to Surfer Magazine and La Nación about the tragedy.
'We have the Police delegation in Playa Negra, the cantonal, which is the most modern in the country. We are working hand in hand on security issues. It shocks us and hurts us, because the Caribbean has been very calm.'
An Isolated Case in a Peaceful Region
He added that 'there have been no cases of violence reported like this against tourists. In recent months, there has been no violence or assaults. This is an isolated case, he is the owner of a hotel, not a tourist, it has not to do with tourists and the people who come to visit us.'
Remembering his brother as a selfless and warm-hearted man, Peter Van Dyke spoke of his legacy of kindness. 'My brother was a very benevolent, giving person who would help just about anybody," he said. "Kurt would never hurt anybody, and he was always there when you needed him.'
