Stranger Things' Maya Hawke shocked fans this week when she got married in a 'surprise' ceremony to partner Christian Lee Hutson. But who exactly is he, and what do we know about him?

Christian Lee Hutson is an American singer-songwriter with three studio albums, long-standing collaborations, and a robust career. He married now-wife Maya Hawke on 14 February in New York City after a four-year relationship.

The private ceremony took place at St. George's Episcopal Church and was attended by close friends and family. Among the guests were Hawke's parents, Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, as well as her Stranger Things co-stars Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton and Joe Keery.

Hawke wore a white wedding gown paired with an oversized feathery winter coat, while Hutson chose a traditional black tuxedo. Uma Thurman wore a light blue gown and Ethan Hawke dressed in black. A reception followed at The Players, a private members' club in Manhattan.

Reports of their relationship first surfaced in 2023 when they were seen together in New York, though they kept their relationship largely private until Hutson confirmed their engagement during a 2025 interview. Hawke is the eldest child of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, who were married from 1998 to 2005.

Early Life And Musical Beginnings

Christian Lee Hutson was born on 5 November 1990 in Kansas City, Missouri. He moved to Los Angeles at the age of five after his mother remarried and later attended a fundamentalist Christian elementary school, according to a 2020 Under The Radar profile. He began playing guitar at 12, learning Elizabeth Cotten's Freight Train as his first song.

His early songwriting was influenced by vintage country records from his father's collection, including releases by Hank Williams. As a teenager, he listened to John Prine, Bright Eyes and Elliott Smith. He left high school to pursue music, despite his parents' objections. Hutson began his career with Pearl Charles in The Driftwood Singers, a group that started as an eight-piece ensemble formed by students at the California Institute of the Arts before becoming a duo.

They released the EP Look! in November 2011 and a self-titled album in 2012 before parting ways in February 2013. Hutson also released his debut solo EP, We Will Never Break Up, in 2012. His first solo album, The Hell With It, followed in 2013 through Trailer Fire Records, with a second album, Yeah Okay, I Know, arriving in 2014.

The latter was produced by Grammy Award nominee David Mayfield and included singles such as They're Gonna Hate Me, Dirty Little Cheat and Mess.

Phoebe Bridgers And Critical Recognition

Hutson was introduced to Phoebe Bridgers in 2018 by her touring guitarist Harrison Whitford. He went on to co-write songs on boygenius (2018), Better Oblivion Community Center (2019) and Punisher (2020), and supported Bridgers on tour in 2019. In 2019, he signed to ANTI– and released Beginners on 29 May 2020, produced by Bridgers.

The album featured Lucy Dacus, Conor Oberst and Meg Duffy and received a 7.8 rating from Pitchfork alongside a Metascore of 75 indicating mostly positive reviews. Between 2020 and 2021, he issued three EPs titled The Version Suicides and contributed Red Dragon Tattoo to the 2021 tribute compilation Saving for a Custom Van.

His second ANTI– album, Quitters, was released on 1 April 2022 and produced by Bridgers and Conor Oberst. It earned a 7.5 rating from Pitchfork and a Metascore of 74 signalling generally favourable reviews. His third album, Paradise Pop. 10, followed in 2024, again co-produced by Bridgers. Between 2022 and 2023, Hutson opened for Bridgers on the international Reunion Tour.
