Pope Leo Addresses Iran War, Pleads Trump to Prevent 'Irreparable Abyss'
Pope Leo XIV calls for diplomatic dialogue amidst escalating Middle East conflict.

Pope Leo XIV has issued a rare and strongly worded public appeal to US President Donald Trump over the escalating conflict in the Middle East, warning of the grave consequences of continued aggression. In a message that cut through political rhetoric and military posturing, the pontiff pleaded with the US president to put an end to 'the spiral of violence' before it leads to 'an irreparable abyss'. He also begged other world leaders to return to diplomatic dialogue in a desperate attempt to maintain global peace.
'A Heartfelt Appeal' From St Peter's Square
On 2 March, Pope Leo led the traditional Sunday prayer in St Peter's Square, where thousands of attendees had flocked to hear the pontiff. He then addressed the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and Iran after it was confirmed that Iran's 86-year-old supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed.
Pope Leo expressed his deep concern over the turmoil, stating that 'stability and peace are not achieved through mutual threats'. He denounced using weapons that 'sow destruction, suffering, and death' and urged world leaders to consider 'reasonable, sincere, and responsible dialogue' instead.
'I address to the parties involved a heartfelt appeal to assume the moral responsibility of halting the spiral of violence before it becomes an irreparable abyss,' the American-born pope said.
He concluded by calling on world leaders to choose the diplomatic option.
'May diplomacy recover its role and may the good of peoples be promoted, peoples who long for peaceful coexistence founded on justice,' the pope said. 'And let us continue to pray for peace.'
How The Iran–Israel–US Conflict Escalated
On 28 February, Israel began their 'preemptive attack' on Iran, claiming that there are escalating security concerns. The United States formally joined them on the same day, officially expanding the scale of the campaign. Since the initial attack, Israeli and American forces reportedly struck most of Iran's 31 provinces. It is currently one of the most extensive military operations in the region.
Meanwhile, Iranian authorities have reported that more than 200 people have been killed since the US and Israel military campaign began. In addition to the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, several senior political and military officials were confirmed to be killed during the attacks.
In response to the strikes, Iran had launched missiles targeting Israeli sites as well as several Gulf Arab states. Air-raid sirens have reportedly been sounded in multiple locations as defence systems attempted to intercept the incoming projectiles. Unfortunately, the attacks continue, and the number of casualties is still rising.
Amidst all this, Israeli officials have pledged to continue what is being described as 'non-stop' operations aimed at Iran's leadership and military infrastructure.
Pope Leo's recent statement echoes his previous concern about the conflicts between Pakistan and Afghanistan, where he urged the leaders of the two countries to explore diplomatic options.
The pontiff's stance continues to reflect broader concerns within the Catholic Church about the human toll of modern warfare and the urgent need for solutions rooted in diplomacy. He appealed for renewed international commitment to peaceful engagement and expressed solidarity with ordinary people affected by conflict, urging continued prayer for peace across the globe.
