Why Was Christy Romano Shot in the Face? What Happened in Her 2025 Accident
Christy Carlson Romano recounts her near-fatal shooting accident, emphasizing survival, recovery, and the importance of firearm safety.

A celebrated former Disney Channel star nearly lost her sight and her life in an accident that has since reshaped her perspective on survival and vulnerability.
In early February 2025, former Disney Channel actor and podcaster Christy Carlson Romano was accidentally shot in the face while participating in a clay pigeon shooting activity with her husband, Brendan Rooney, marking one of the most harrowing and unexpected turns in her life to date.
The Accident That Nearly Ended It All
Christy Carlson Romano, 41, was celebrating her husband's birthday on 07 February 2025 when the accident occurred at what was meant to be a routine outdoor sporting outing. According to Romano's own account on the Not a Damn Chance! podcast, the incident was not deliberate or malicious but the result of another party at the shooting range discharging their firearm unsafely.
'It's a birdshot that got sprayed in my direction by another party, and essentially it was within 200 feet,' Romano explained during her first detailed recounting of the incident, stressing that 'they weren't malicious. It wasn't aggravated assault. It's what happened.'
The birdshot pellets struck her multiple times, including at least one shot that embedded itself behind her right eye and another in her forehead. Romano revealed that one fragment remains lodged just 1 mm from permanently blinding her. Had the angle been different, she said, the consequences could have been irreversible blindness or even death.
Romano's immediate reaction to the injury was shock and disbelief. 'I'm shocked and what goes through my head immediately is, 'Oh, that's dope, I just got shot,' she said, recalling a surreal, out-of-body sensation. Moments later, fear set in: 'Oh now I'm gonna die.'
Her husband, Rooney, was quick to act. Witnessing Romano's initial lack of audible distress, he immediately checked her condition and rushed her to a hospital, a move Romano later credited with helping prevent worse outcomes.
Survival, Recovery, and Reflection
At the hospital, medical professionals determined that surgical removal of the shot fragments posed greater risk than leaving them in place. According to Romano's own Instagram and later interviews, the piece behind her eye could not be safely extracted without risking serious further injury.
Despite the severity of the injury, Romano retained her vision and survived without critical damage. 'If my head would've been tilted in any other direction, I would have been blind in my right eye,' she said, emphasising how close she came to permanent impairment or death.
In the weeks following the accident, Romano shared updates on social media, describing both physical recovery and emotional upheaval. She spoke of profound gratitude and a shift in outlook, saying that the experience profoundly changed her view of life and her priorities.
'As terrifying as it was, I am more grateful than ever,' Romano posted about three weeks after the incident. She said she felt 'healing really well' and that each day after the accident felt like a gift. Among her reflections were renewed focus on her family, humour, and openness to sharing personal passions with her audience.
Romano's Personal Account: 'Out of Body' and Near Tragedy
In the Not a Damn Chance! podcast interview, her most extensive recounting yet, Romano offered vivid first-person details that reveal the human toll beneath the public updates. She described sinking to her knee after realising she had been hit and the visceral flood of frightening thoughts that followed: 'Am I gonna die? Who's gonna take care of the girls? Is my career over?'
The reaction, she noted, was partly influenced by her time on Special Forces: World's Toughest Test, where training encouraged reaching for a controlled signal, such as a thumbs-up, during stressful moments. Immediately after being shot, she instinctively gave a thumbs-up to her husband, who initially mistook it as a sign she was uninjured, until she clarified the severity.
Romano's willingness to engage humour even during her hospital stay, describing herself later as a 'gunshot wound survivor', underscores both her resilience and her attempt to normalise difficult experiences for her followers.
Safety, Probability, and Public Message
Clay pigeon shooting is generally regarded as a controlled shooting sport where strict safety protocols are expected. Romano's story, however, underscores that even regulated activities carry inherent risks when safety procedures fail or are disregarded. Her account has sparked wider discussion about the importance of firearm safety and risk awareness in such environments.
Romano's narrative also highlights how a single moment of negligence can have life-altering consequences, reinforcing the need for rigorous adherence to safety standards in all shooting sports.
Aftermath and Current Focus
As Romano continues her recovery, she has remained active both in her creative endeavours and personal revelations. She referenced the shooting as a pivotal moment in recent health updates and in forthcoming memoir projects, reflecting on vulnerability and resilience in equal measure.
Her public message to followers has shifted to both caution and compassion, urging others to reflect on life's fragility without minimising the realities of her own experience.
Romano's story stands as a stark reminder that even experienced adults can fall victim to catastrophic accidents and that survival is often a matter of circumstance, immediate response, and sheer luck.
