A Decade Later, Debate Rages: Was Blake Fielder-Civil to Blame for Amy Winehouse's Death?

Since Amy Winehouse's death in 2011 due to alcohol poisoning, one person who has been blamed for the singer's untimely death was her ex-husband, Blake Fielder-Civil. Both tied the knot in 2007 but divorced in 2009.
Despite that divorce, both remained in each other's lives. Also, both went through a lot in those two years of being married. Fielder-Civil admitted that while he was the one who introduced the 27-year-old singer to heroin, the other drugs Winehouse tried were of her own accord.
Fielder-Civil shared his side when he spoke on the We Need To Talk podcast. He explained that while he and Winehouse never had the smoothest of relationships, he found it unfair to say that he should shoulder some responsibility for the death of the Grammy Award-winning singer.
'My stance now is that I know a lot of people, especially people reading media 20 years ago, would have 'My stance now is that I know a lot of people, especially people reading the media 20 years ago, would have an idea that Amy's passing is my responsibility. As I've always said, I never shirk from any responsibility. If I've done something, I'll put my hand up to it,' Fielder-Civil stated
Winehouse Did Things 'Her Way'
The now-43-year-old who has remained out of the spotlight, added that Winehouse was a strong woman. She did what she wanted to do and no one, not even Fielder-Civil, could do anything about it.
'Amy herself had agency. And that is in no way at all disrespecting her by saying that, but Amy did what she wanted to do,' Blake said.
As far as being hooked to drugs, Fielder-Civil also cleared the air. He insisted that before he met Winehouse, he was not a drug addict. Rather, he said that both of them became drug addicts together.
'I never understood, do these people think that I forced Amy to do drugs? That's just not what happened,' Fielder-Civil explained.
Where was Fielder-Civil when Winehouse Died?
Considering he and Winehouse remained in each other's lives, a curious question was where Fielder-Civil was when Amy died. He shared that he was behind bars at the time for a bar fight. He also added that at the time of his former wife's death, Amy's drug addiction was at its worst, according to a report by E! News.
'Our love had nothing to do with addiction and addiction had nothing to do with our love. That's where it went. It wasn't who we were,' Blake stated.
Amy Winehouse Dad's True Feelings About Blake
While there are some who feel that Blake should shoulder some responsibility, one person close to Amy Winehouse feels otherwise. Mitch Winehouse, father of Amy, admitted holding Fielder-Civil accountable for several things. However, that does not include the death of his daughter.
'I blame him for a lot of things. He started her on the road to hard drugs. But her death was a horrible accident. It was her responsibility. She was told that if she detoxed without medical intervention, this whole thing could happen. He started her off on the road to drugs. But I don't blame him for her death,' the elder Winehouse said to The Sun in 2011.
There is no doubt that alcoholism and drugs were factors in the tragic passing of Amy Winehouse in 2011. Although he feels he should not be responsible, Fielder-Civil played a role. But in general, it was the 27-year-old who controlled her life – meaning she could consume and take whatever she wanted, even if it carried dire consequences.
