Trump's Push for ICE at Airports Sparks Fears of Illegal Arrests Amid Shutdown-Related TSA Walkouts
Critics warn of potential abuse and inefficiency as ICE agents are deployed to manage airport security amid the shutdown crisis.

Democrats slammed President Donald Trump's order to deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to US airports on Monday, describing the POTUS's response as a reckless escalation. On Sunday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer warned that the presence of ICE at airports would only make the situation worse.
'ICE agents, who are untrained and have caused problems everywhere they've gone, lurking at our airports — that's asking for trouble,' Schumer cautioned, per ABC7. 'And it will certainly make the chaos at our airports worse.'
ICE at Airports Spur Fears of Authority Abuse
California representative Speaker Nancy Pelosi echoed the statement, arguing that Republicans should focus on ending the shutdown instead. 'It's completely wrong, ICE agents are not trained for the job they have. They're inadequate for that and they move on to another job, and inadequately trained to be at the airport,' she said.
Beyond arguments of efficiency and capability, critics also warn that the deployments run the risk of being abused by ICE agents, especially those who might seize the opportunity to set up deportation traps.
On 21 March, Trump threatened to place ICE at airports as security agents. Asserting that the government is pushing to end the shutdown, Trump held Democrats accountable for the impasse.
Critics Say Trump's Solution Is Rash and Pointless
'The Radical Left Democrats have hurt so many people with their vicious and uncaring ways. What they have done to the Department of Homeland Security, our fantastic TSA Officers, and, most importantly, the great people of our Country, is an absolute disgrace,' he wrote on Truth Social.
'If the Democrats do not allow for Just and Proper Security at our Airports, and elsewhere throughout our Country, ICE will do the job far better than ever done before! The Fascist Democrats will never protect America, but the Republicans will,' he added. 'Likewise, I look forward to moving ICE in on Monday, and have already told them to, "GET READY.' NO MORE WAITING, NO MORE GAMES!"'
TSA experts argue that the push to deploy ICE at airports will not fulfil its intended purpose, since the agents lack training in screening and airport protocols. 'It serves no practical use,' one insider told Government Executive. 'It's a political, publicity action, not a practical solution.'
Airports Struggle as Shutdown Crisis Deepens
Roughly 61,000 TSA employees have been working without paychecks for the past five weeks. According to NBC News, more than 400 workers have quit since the shutdown, while others are simply skipping work to do side gigs. The attrition has resulted in much longer queues at airports, just as passengers swarm in for spring break.
Per CNN, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta reported a third of its screeners were absent last week, resulting in wait times of two hours. Houston's William P. Hobby International Airport also saw half of its TSA staff absent on Friday, while LaGuardia, Bush Intercontinental, and JFK faced 40-minute queues.
The Department of Homeland Security deployed ICE at airports across the US on Monday, in Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta, Los Angeles International, Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago O'Hare, Miami International, John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, Philadelphia International, Denver International, and Phoenix Sky Harbor. ICE teams arrived at priority hubs to manage queues, but TSA callouts reportedly persisted above 9 per cent.
