'Real Housewives' Star and Husband Arrested in Florida Over Alleged $5K Grocery Theft Scheme
South African reality TV stars face legal troubles in the U.S. over alleged grocery thefts.

A South African reality television couple known for their appearances on The Real Housewives of Pretoria have been arrested in the United States and charged with a months‑long grocery theft scheme that saw them allegedly steal more than $5,300 (£3,970) worth of goods from a Florida supermarket.
The case has drawn widespread attention due to the couple's television fame and the unusual nature of the alleged offences.
Arrest in Boca Raton After Alleged Theft Spree
On 10 March 2026, police in Boca Raton, Florida, arrested Melany 'Mel' Viljoen and her husband, Petrus 'Peet' Viljoen, after a lengthy investigation into thefts at Publix supermarkets in South Florida. Authorities allege the pair used deceptive tactics to avoid paying full price for groceries over a period of approximately six months.
According to the Boca Raton Police Department arrest affidavit, the couple allegedly stole more than $5,300 (£3,970) worth of groceries from the Publix at South Federal Highway, employing a method known as 'ticket switching.' The scheme reportedly involved removing or swapping barcodes so lower prices were scanned instead of the actual, higher costs of items.
Police identified 392 unpaid items across surveillance footage and transaction records linked to the couple's shopping activities from 29 August 2025 to early March 2026. Of these, 369 items were clearly visible on video, investigators said. The items allegedly taken included sparkling water, wine, toilet paper, fruit, and other groceries, according to the police report.
'Ticket Switching' and Surveillance Evidence
Investigators reviewed dozens of transactions that allegedly showed Melany scanning inexpensive items, such as seasoning packets, in place of more expensive products.
In some instances, surveillance footage purportedly showed Petrus distracting store employees while Melany committed the alleged thefts. On one occasion, he is said to have pushed a cart full of goods out of the store without paying.
The couple's black 2016 Range Rover was reportedly matched in the surveillance footage during several of the alleged offences, aiding police in identifying and locating the pair. They were later pulled over during a traffic stop, leading to their arrest.
Charges and Bond
Both Melany and Petrus were charged with aggravated grand retail theft over $3,000 (£2,247), a serious felony in Florida. Each has been held on a $10,000 (£7,491) bond, and the case remains under investigation as prosecutors prepare to pursue the charges.
Authorities stated that while Melany admitted involvement in some of the alleged thefts, claiming she acted alone, surveillance evidence indicated both participated in the alleged crimes.
Melany, who rose to fame through her role on The Real Housewives of Pretoria and its spin‑off 'The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip: South Africa', reportedly told police she engaged in the alleged thefts because she was in 'survival mode' and had not been able to work since arriving in the United States due to visa issues.
Reality TV Fame in the Spotlight

The reality series The Real Housewives of Pretoria, which premiered in late 2022 and follows affluent women in South Africa's capital, has helped bring the couple into the public eye.
Melany has been a prominent cast member alongside other personalities on the show, which forms part of the global Real Housewives franchise. The alleged crimes and subsequent arrest have now placed the couple under intense public scrutiny far beyond their reality TV persona.
After moving to the United States, Petrus, who previously practised law in South Africa before being disbarred, has reportedly attempted to establish himself in business, while Melany launched a podcast and pursued social media ventures.
Their transition to the US has been tumultuous, and their recent legal troubles add a dramatic chapter to their public narrative.
Next Steps in the Legal Process
With the charges now filed and the couple in custody, legal proceedings are expected to continue as prosecutors build their case against Melany and Petrus. If convicted of aggravated grand retail theft and related offences, they could face significant legal penalties under Florida law.
The court's decisions in the coming weeks will determine the direction and possible outcomes of what has become an extraordinary legal saga for a pair once known primarily for their reality TV presence.
