The transition from a comfortable lifestyle to a prison cell is a reality that few are prepared to face. For disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein, the shift has necessitated specialised professional assistance.

In his first major sit-down interview from behind bars at Rikers Island, Weinstein revealed the measures he has taken to endure incarceration. He has enlisted the services of a professional 'prison consultant' to navigate the complexities and dangers of life within the correctional system.

Harvey Weinstein: 'He Just Helped Me Navigate This System'

In a sit-down interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the disgraced film producer confirmed that he hired a prison consultant before he went to jail. For a client like Weinstein, a prison consultant acts as an intermediary and strategist. The firm assists in managing the logistics of incarceration, ensuring that the client's basic rights are upheld in an environment that is often indifferent to individual needs. When asked about the best advice he received from his prison consultant, Weinstein said 'It wasn't one thing.'

'He just helped me navigate this system,' Weinstein told THR about the role of the prison consultant. 'All the unspoken little rules and do's and don'ts to watch out for.'

Most importantly, the prison consultant reportedly saved his life when he fell ill.

'When I got sick last year, I was freezing to death in my cell. For days, I couldn't move. There's no doctor here,' Weinstein shared. 'We're on Rikers Island — all these prisoners and no doctor. Finally, I called Craig Rothfeld and begged him, "Please help me. I'm sick. I don't know what to do." He got on the phone and they shipped me to Bellevue. I had a heart operation the next day. A day later and I would have been gone.'

Weinstein added that he has bone marrow cancer and believes he is 'dying' in prison. But if he had a choice, he did not want to spend his last days inside a cell.

'I don't want to die in here,' Weinstein added.

Who Is Craig Rothfeld?

Craig Rothfeld, Harvey Weinstein's prison consultant, is the founder and owner of Inside Outside Ltd. His firm specializes in providing comprehensive support to individuals facing the daunting prospect of life behind bars.

Rothfeld has become a go-to figure for high-profile clients, including not only Weinstein but also Luigi Mangione and others facing intense public scrutiny. According to the Inside Outside Ltd. website, the company offers a bridge between the 'outside' world and the rigid, often opaque structures of the 'inside' environment.

The need for such a consultant stems from the volatility of the prison system, where administrative hurdles and safety risks are constant. Rothfeld's firm provides guidance on everything from facility placement and access to medical care to understanding the unwritten social codes of the inmate population.

Consultants are often hired because the legal team's expertise ends at the courtroom door. Inside Outside Ltd. emphasizes that preparation is the key to reducing the trauma associated with a loss of liberty and maintaining one's well-being during a lengthy sentence.

Prison consultant fees can cost thousands of pounds, depending on the client and the duration of the consultation, per Fox2 Now. Claudia Calderon, who used the same service, after pleading guilty to wire fraud in 2016 for stealing £1.5 million ($2 million), said it was worth it.

'I was able to make my time in prison brave and productive,' she told the outlet. 'Without a consultant, I would have had no idea what I was facing or what I was doing.'

Conviction and Denial

Harvey Weinstein is currently being held at the Rikers Island jail complex in New York as he awaits further legal proceedings in a complex series of retrials and new charges. Over 80 women came forward and accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct.

Although his landmark 2020 New York conviction for third-degree rape and a first-degree criminal sexual act was overturned by the Court of Appeals in April 2024 due to procedural errors, he remains in custody because he was convicted of one count of sexual assault in a 2025 retrial. Additionally, he had a separate conviction in 2022 in Los Angeles. In that California trial, a jury found him guilty of three counts of rape and sexual assault, resulting in a 16-year prison sentence.

Despite the conviction, Weinstein has remained adamant about his innocence, even telling his kids, 'I never sexually assaulted anyone.'

'I will be proven innocent. That I promise you,' Weinstein said during the interview.
