A photograph of Armie Hammer at a restaurant in the US spread widely on social media this week, prompting renewed commentary on both his appearance and the cannibalism scandal that derailed his Hollywood career. The image, shared on X on 12 March, showed the 39-year-old 'Call Me by Your Name' actor smiling at a dinner table, visibly heavier than at the height of his career.

Hammer's career collapsed in 2021 after multiple women accused him of sexual and emotional abuse and claimed he harboured cannibalism-related fetishes. He has consistently denied all allegations. No charges have been filed, and no judicial findings have been made; all claims remain unproven.

Viral Photo and Social Media Reaction

The photograph attracted thousands of comments within hours, many focused on Hammer's changed appearance. 'Someone inflated him,' one user wrote, while another remarked he had been 'hitting those protein goals.' The response was the sort of casual body commentary that tends to follow once-sculpted male celebrities when they fall from public favour.

Others returned directly to the controversy. Several users joked he had been 'eating too many people.' 'He's looking fuller these days, who's been on the menu?' one post read. Another added: 'I'd give him one of my ribs.' The combination of body commentary and dark references to the scandal ensured the image spread rapidly.

The Scandal That Derailed His Career

The cannibalism narrative began when screenshots of graphic messages, allegedly sent by the actor, circulated online in 2021. They were followed by on-the-record accusations from women who had been involved with him. Model Paige Lorenze, who dated Hammer briefly in 2020, claimed he told her he wanted to eat her ribs and that he carved an 'A' into her skin. App developer Courtney Vucekovich gave a similar account, saying the 'Death on the Nile' actor fantasised about breaking her rib, 'barbecue it and eat it,' and described how he 'captivates you... [while] he's grooming you for things that are darker and heavier.'

The accusations triggered a swift industry response. 'The Social Network' actor lost his agency representation and publicist and was removed from several film and television projects, before entering rehabilitation in the Cayman Islands for reported drug, alcohol and sex-related issues. A source quoted in 2025 said Hammer had 'apologised privately to everyone he's hurt and continues to take responsibility for unhealthy and harmful behaviors,' adding that he was 'focused on co-parenting and rebuilding his career humbly.' That characterisation cannot be independently verified.

Hammer shares two children, daughter Harper and son Ford, with his former wife Elizabeth Chambers, whom he married in 2010. The couple separated in 2020, before the scandal emerged. The same source said Hammer is now sober and concentrating on family alongside work.

Career Tentatively Resumes as Hammer Faces Online Scrutiny

Hammer has already begun re-entering the film industry, albeit outside the studio system that once backed him. He appeared in the 2025 'Western Frontier Crucible', his first notable role since the allegations surfaced, and in a January 2025 podcast interview, reportedly said two more films were in development.

The reaction to this week's photograph suggests the scandal has not faded from public consciousness. Commenters did not engage with 'Frontier Crucible' or Hammer's reported sobriety; they returned to the same jokes about ribs, menus, and meat. No official response has come from Hammer or his representatives regarding the photograph or the renewed commentary. The most serious allegations against him remain untested in any court, living instead in interviews, private messages, and a sprawling body of documentaries and online speculation.
