Mel Schilling, one of the most recognisable faces of Married at First Sight (MAFS), has announced she will be stepping down from the UK edition of the reality series. Her departure comes amid a deeply personal health battle.

Earlier in February, the 54-year-old relationship expert confirmed her departure from MAFS Australia via an Instagram post. Schilling has shared candid updates about her cancer journey, revealing that the illness has now spread to her brain.

'My Light is Starting to Fade'

In her announcement, Schilling said: 'After 12 extraordinary seasons, I have made the heartfelt decision to step away from my role as an expert on Married at First Sight Australia,' adding that the exit is the 'right move for my future'.

Schilling shared that her 'light is starting to fade' amid her cancer battle after doctors said that 'there is nothing further they can do' about the cancer that has already spread to her brain.

Schilling's Cancer Battle

In December 2023, Schilling shared that she was diagnosed with colon cancer after a tumour was discovered during a scan. 'I was diagnosed with colon cancer after a tumour the size of a lemon was discovered during a scan. "Terry," as I called him, was successfully removed and I was initially given the all clear,' she wrote on Instagram.

However, in February 2024, small nodules were discovered in her lungs, signalling that her cancer has metastasised.

'Over the past two years, while filming MAFS, I underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy and was later told I was eligible for a groundbreaking clinical trial specific to my gene type, due to start in March 2026. Once again, my optimism soared that I might beat this thing,' Shilling added.

However, during Christmas, Schilling said that she 'began experiencing blinding headaches and numbness down my right side.' She underwent many tests, which revealed that her cancer 'had spread to the left side of my brain'.

She received radiotherapy sessions, but her oncology team has since informed her that 'there is nothing further they can do'. 'Hearing those words changes everything,' she wrote.

Schilling said, 'My light is starting to fade — and quickly. But I am still here, still fighting, and surrounded by the most incredible love'.

Schilling shared that because of her illness, simple tasks have become incredibly difficult. She expressed deep appreciation for her family, who are now caring for her.

Schilling also candidly admitted, 'I honestly don't know how long I have left, but I do know I will fight to my last breath and will be surrounded by the love and support of my people.'

She thanked those who have sent and continue to send her support amid her battle with cancer. 'They have meant more than I can ever properly express and have helped shape the mindset I've needed to keep fighting. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.'

Schilling encourages everyone to get checked 'if something doesn't feel right,' adding, 'It might just save your life.'

John Aiken to Step In

Following the heartbreaking news regarding Schilling's health status, Channel 4 has confirmed that John Aiken, her colleagues from MAFS Australia, will take over her role on the UK series.

'With Mel's blessing, her good friend and fellow MAFS Australia expert, John Aiken, has done us the great favour of stepping in for her for this series,' they said in a statement posted on their social media.

The broadcaster also sent love and support for Schilling and her family amid this difficult time, describing her as 'a hugely valued and much-loved part of the Channel 4 family; to many of us she is a friend as well as a colleague.'

They added, 'Her wisdom, warmth, humour and kindness shine through, and these qualities mean that everyone involved in MAFS, from the producers and contributors, to the viewers, love and respect her as much as we do.'
